Biography

His parents came from the small village of Agioi Vavatsinias (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Agioi_Vavatsinias), in the district of Larnaca (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Larnaca_District), Cyprus (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Cyprus).[1] (http://www.radio-nina.com/forum2/#cite_note-0) Loizos moved to Athens (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Athens) at the age of 17 intending to study pharmacology (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Pharmacology) but soon gave up his studies in order to concentrate on his musical career. He was a self-taught (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Self-taught) musician, with no formal musical arts training. His first recordings were made in 1963 but he started gaining a larger audience after 1967. By 1975 Loizos had become one of the most popular artists in Greek music.
He died on 17 September 1982 in a hospital in Moscow (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Moscow), Soviet Union (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Soviet_Union) after suffering several strokes. He was well known for his leftist political (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Left-wing_politics) ideology (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Ideology) and was an outspoken critic of the Greek military junta (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Greek_military_junta_of_1967-1974). He was also an active member of the Greek Communist Party (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Communist_Party_of_Greece). The year 2007 was declared "Manos Loizos Year" in Greece.

He composed many well-known Greek songs (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Song) and has co-operated with various important composers, singers and lyricists (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Lyricist) like Mikis Theodorakis (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Mikis_Theodorakis), Haris Alexiou (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Haris_Alexiou), George Dalaras (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/George_Dalaras), Vasilis Papakonstantinou (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Vasilis_Papakonstantinou), Christos Leontis (http://www.radio-nina.com/w/index.php?title=Christos_Leontis&action=edit&redlink=1), Fondas Ladis, Yannis Negrepontis, Manolis Rasoulis (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Manolis_Rasoulis), Giannis Kalatzis (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Giannis_Kalatzis), Nazim Hikmet (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Nazim_Hikmet) and many others. His best known co-operation was with his very personal friend, lyricist Lefteris Papadopoulos (http://www.radio-nina.com/wiki/Lefteris_Papadopoulos) who wrote the lyrics of many of Loizos' most successful hits.

Manos Loizos' songs and music remain popular until today among all ages of the Greek society.
